Automattic and WP Engine’s clash is on a peek. They both have filed cease and desist orders to each other. In the latest action, WP Engine is blocked from WordPress.org using its theme & plugins.
Matt Mullenweg, CEO of WordPress has stated some strong objections. He said, “What I will tell you is that, pending their legal claims and litigation against WordPress.org, WP Engine no longer has free access to WordPress.org’s resources. WP Engine wants to control your WordPress experience, they need to run their own user login system, update servers, plugin directory, theme directory, pattern directory, block directory, translations, photo directory, job board, meetups, conferences, bug tracker, forums, Slack, Ping-o-matic, and showcase. Their servers can no longer access our servers for free.”
He added, “The reason WordPress sites don’t get hacked as much anymore is we work with hosts to block vulnerabilities at the network layer, WP Engine will need to replicate that security research on their own.” Moreover, WP Engine doesn’t have a trademark license, Matt claimed.
WordPress no longer provides free services to the WP Engine. So, the users of WP Engine are facing troubles. They have to update their plugins manually as we used to do in the past. They won’t be receiving any updates or using any free WordPress plugins directly from the repository from the WordPress dashboard. This applies to plugins and all free WordPress themes, patterns, and blocks. Due to the current issue, WordPress suggests contacting WP Engine support to get the issue fixed.
WordPress encourages people to use other hosts instead of WP Engine. That’s their final statement.
